If you’re visiting London and dreaming of those iconic vacation photos that capture the city’s charm - think Big Ben, the London Eye, and those classic red phone boxes - Westminster is the perfect spot. This part of London is home to some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, offering endless opportunities for stunning, postcard-worthy photos. From the grand architecture of Parliament to the sweeping views over the River Thames, it’s a location that truly captures the essence of London.
Shooting here is like stepping into the pages of a travel magazine - every corner is instantly recognisable, effortlessly photogenic, and filled with that unmistakable London energy. Whether you’re visiting for a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday, a romantic trip, or solo adventure, this route is ideal for capturing unforgettable memories.

I recently photographed a lovely family visiting from the United States, who wanted to document their London holiday with a relaxed and fun photoshoot. We started bright and early - and I mean early - to beat the crowds around Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. Their two young boys were understandably sleepy and a little camera shy, so it took some creative energy (and plenty of silliness!) to get them smiling.
There was a bit of running around, a few rounds of peekaboo, and lots of patience, but before long, they’d warmed up and were laughing their way through the session. We explored the area together, capturing a mix of natural moments, playful shots, and classic family portraits with London’s most iconic backdrops. By the end, we had a beautiful collection of fun, relaxed images that truly reflected the joy of their trip - and the parents were thrilled with the results.

Tips for a Family Photoshoot at Big Ben, London Eye & Westminster
Opening hours:
These are public spaces, so they’re open 24/7. Westminster bridge may be shut for road closures or public events like marathons.
Best time to shoot:
These spots get very busy, and crowds start forming from around 9am. If you’ve ever seen those dreamy Instagram photos with empty bridges and perfect light - they were taken early! Aim to start between 6am and 9am for the best lighting and minimal crowds. Shooting later in the morning or afternoon is still possible, but you’ll have lots of people in the background.
Travel tips:
By car: Traffic in Westminster can be heavy, especially during rush hour. It’s worth considering whether an Uber or taxi is practical, as sometimes the tube is faster.
By public transport: Westminster Station is the most convenient - it’s on the Circle, District, and Jubilee lines and just steps away from the main landmarks.

Footwear:
Comfort is non-negotiable - there’s a lot of walking involved when shooting across these landmarks! Even if you plan to wear heels for photos, bring trainers or slip-ons to move between locations comfortably.
Outfit recommendations:
You’ll want to look stylish but also feel comfortable and confident. Avoid wearing beige or grey as your main colour, as these tones can blend in with Big Ben’s stonework. Pops of colour - deep reds, navy, or jewel tones - look amazing against London’s backdrop. Bring a light jacket, cardigan, or shawl just in case; the weather in London can change quickly, and it often gets breezy near the bridge.
Seasonal tips:
Summer: The best time for those golden, glowing sunrise shots! Early mornings around 6–7am offer incredible light and fewer people.
Autumn, Winter & Spring: The main difference is light levels - days are shorter in winter, so plan your shoot time accordingly. While there’s not much greenery in this area, the architecture remains striking year-round.

Photographing in Westminster is always such a joy - the energy, the views, and the unmistakable London atmosphere make every session special. This family shoot was a reminder of how beautiful candid moments can be, even in one of the busiest parts of the city.
